GREENWICH Not many towns still have movie theaters left in their downtown area. In Greenwich you can enjoy the luxury of strolling from a nice restaurant to a theater.

914.725.0999 Now in its 30th season and with over 500 members, it has two 6-film series. Movies from the 30s through the 70s with lectures by guest film critics are shown Saturday mornings at the Crown Plaza. Membership is $110 for each 6 film series.
Greenwich Library Friday Films (MAP) 101 West Putnam Avenue, 622.7910 At 8 pm (doors open at 7:40) in the Cole Auditorium, the library presents award-winning US and foreign films. Admission is free. Call to get a schedule and verify that a film is being shown.
STAMFORD, CT (10-15 minutes away) 272 Bedford Street, Stamford, 967.3660 The Avon Theater is a fully restored classic movie theater. Built in 1939, the Avon was run by Crown Theaters until it closed in 1998. In 2001 it was purchased by a private investor from Greenwich. The theater has been fully restored and re-opened January of 2004 to show independent, art and foreign films as well as Hollywood classics.

Caramoor Center for Music and Arts (MAP) Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah, NY, 914.232.1252 Caramoor has wonderful music programs in a very intriguing setting. It should be on everyone’s “must-do” list. For evening performances, it is fashionable to bring a fancy picnic supper and eat on one of the lawns before the show. Caramoor has 100 acres of parklands and formal gardens. Most performances are open air, unless it rains. Mosquitoes are sparse but bringing some bug spray in the summer can’t hurt. The main season is June through August although Caramoor provides fall, winter and spring indoor programs on a more limited schedule. Directions: About 20 minutes from Greenwich. Take North Street N to the end (Bedford Village), R at the end, L on Route 22 N, R on Girdle Ridge Road; or I-684 N to exit 6, E on Rte 35, R on Rte 22 S.

Greenwich Symphony Orchestra (MAP) 869.2664 This 90-member professional orchestra is in its 47th season. They play consistently excellent music at a low ticket prices. Ask for a CD of their music highlights. Concerts are Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons at Greenwich High School. Be sure to attend pre-concert lectures. It produces professionally staged family musicals and Shakespearian productions during the summer. Shakespeare is performed in the outdoor walled garden at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT. Musicals and other performances are held in the Saxe Middle School Theater, South Avenue, New Canaan.

Westport Country Playhouse (MAP) 25 Powers Court, Westport, CT, 203.227.4177 A 6 play summer season starting in June. Very professional. Only a 20 minute trip. Good seats matter here. If you cannot get seats in the first 15 orchestra rows or in the first 4 rows of the balcony consider another theater. They also have a children’s series. Yale University Repertory Theater (MAP) 1120 Chapel St., PO Box 1257, New Haven, CT, 203.432.1234 It is a drive—about an hour—but it’s well worth it. Often as good as Broadway, but with much less hassle, better seats and lower prices. You can park right next to the theater for free. Subscribers can get front row seats. Directions: I-95 N to exit 49, I-91 N to exit 3 (Trumbull Street). Stay in the middle lane and continue straight, L on Prospect Street (College Street), L on Elm.
